Bags pile up at North Mahaska

Thousands of plastic bags destined for the landfill are bagged up for recycling into benches by Friends of Mahaska County Conservation. The North Mahaska Elementary class that brings in the most bags will receive a pizza party from the Friends organization. There are two more weeks left in the contest. Anyone interested in donating may give them to an elementary student or teacher. RD Keep/MAP Photo

NEW SHARON – Strolling through the halls of North Mahaska Elementary one will see piles of bags. Bags of all shapes and sizes advertising all kinds of stores – all of which are destined for the landfill – or at least they were.

Friends of Mahaska County Conservation was the recipient of a Build-with-Bags grant from the Iowa Grocers Association earlier this year that promoted the recycling of plastic shopping/grocery bags for the purpose of having plastic furniture made from them. The Friends group is using the grant money for recyclable plastic park benches that are being place in various county conservation parks along with the Environmental Learning Center.
