Since 1980 Carolyn Brickley has been molding musical minds, teaching methods and impacting lives for a lifetime. Thursday night, the North Mahaska Elementary music director put down the baton following the annual spring concert.

“It’s bittersweet for me,” said Brickley. “It has been 38 wonderful years.”

Brickley would not say it herself, but the impact she has had was evident during a moment with elementary principal and school superintendent Angela Livezey. Livezey asked for anyone in the audience who had been one of Brickley’s students to stand up. More than a third of the capacity crowd stood.

Junior-senior high band director Bruce Peiffer student taught under Brickley in 1993.
