A First Time For Everything

Rachel Freeborn of Barnes City is involved in many activities as a senior at North Mahaska, including band, choir, National Honor Society, the student mentorship program, and Large Group Speech, but not Individual Speech until her final year of school.

“It’s so different than Large Group Speech because you’re completely on your own and if you slip up you can’t rely on others to fix your mistake,” Freeborn said. “This year, I did it on accident after my teacher asked me which script I wanted to do.”

The script she chose was entitled When Love Brings Pain by Janet Dowhower Webster, an acting piece that drew on Freeborn’s acting abilities through years of starring in plays and musicals at North Mahaska. Despite it being only her first year in Individual Speech, Sarah Martin was excited to finally direct Freeborn outside
