NM Boys Notch Second Win

A problem area for the North Mahaska boy’s basketball team became its friend Tuesday. The charity stripe has not been their friend, but a 24-for-36 effort including 6-of-10 in the fourth quarter help lift NM to a 58-56 victory.

The game started with a bang as HLV led 20-15 to start, but NM outscored the Warriors 23-8 in the second period for a 10-point advantage. HLV closed the gap to two, 48-46 entering the final frame. The Warriors held NM to just one field goal in the fourth quarter and used a pair of 3-pointers to keep pressure on NM to take a 54-51 lead.

Logan Shipley and Ben Sherburne were able to get to the free throw line in the four quarter. Sherburne hit one of two shots with a minute left to cut the HLV lead to 56-55. Mitch Thys missed the front end of a one-and-one for HLV then Shipley hit a free throw to tie the game with 29.7 seconds to play. Shipley defected the inbounds pass, Sherburne grabbed it and put it into the basket with 22 seconds left. HLV missed here shots from underneath the basket in the final five seconds before the buzzer sounded.
