NM Girls Claim SICL Crown

With one conference game to go North Mahaska’s third-ranked Warhawk girls have sealed at least a share of the South Iowa Cedar League crown. A win over English Valleys on Feb. 2 will give them the outright title.

North Mahaska ran its season mark to 19-0 and 17-0 in the league. Sigourney has one loss. North Mahaska topped Colfax- Mingo 78-29 on Tuesday. All but one player scored for the Warhawks including Alex Knockel, who scored 11 points in the fourth quarter. Kassidi Steel and Cheyenne Shaw each finished in double figures with 18 and 14 points respectively.

“We have really good shooters and they were playing excited basketball,” said NM coach L.E. Moore.

Colfax-Mingo was on the short end of the Warhawks’ tenacious defense. NM scored 15 of its 26 first period points off 12 CM turnovers. They led 26-4 after one and 48-16 at halftime. Moore allowed his first team to play much of the third period before yielding to the remaining players. There was not much difference as NM outscored the Tigerhawks, 19-10.
