North Mahaska Falls in State Opener

North Mahaska hoist their participation trophy following a 67-54 loss to No. 2 West Hancock in the opening round of the Class 1A state basketball torunament Wednesday.

It had been seven years since the wide-eyed fourth graders from North Mahaska entered Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Wednesday afternoon those same girls were just as wide-eyed as they strode in for their state encounter in the Class 1A with No. 2 West Hancock. In the end it was too much Eagle pressure ending North Mahaska’s season, 67-54.

“I am proud of the way we played,” said North Mahaska coach L.E. Moore. “We would get down then we would battle back.”

Emma Tyrrel led North Mahaska with 16 points and Jade Hay had 13.

North Mahaska ends the season 15-5.
