Stodghill, Landgrebe make state field

This time of year is exciting and exasperating for athletes and coaches. Hopes are either realized or dashed in a single moment. For two Sun area wrestlers their hops and seasons continue, for others the season has come to an end.

North Mahaska junior Jarrett Stodghill notched his slot in the state Class 1A wrestling tourney while senior teammate Tyler Strasser came up short. Tyler Landgrebe of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont was the only Rocket to earn a state berth.

Stodghill and Strasser competed in a tough district at Pleasantville, dominated by Pekin. Stodghill, 18-4, opened his day with a 17-7 major decision over a familiar foe Dylan Caskey of HLV. Stodghill lost his title bout to Pekin’s Zach Hammes (25- 6) 6-2. Going to a possible wrestleback, Stodghill would have faced Caskey again, but by rule earned the runnerup spot since he had previously defeated Caskey earlier in the day.

It is the second trip to state for Stodghill. The past two seasons have been challenging for the NM junior due to injury and illness.
