Supervisors Continue Trend

In January Mahaska County Supervisor Steve Wanders took exception to a comment from the minutes of the county compensation committee regarding the trend of cutting the recommendations from the committee for elected official salaries. At Monday’s meeting he proposed cutting the recommendations by 50 percent.

In January the supervisors hoped the committee would meet again to reconsider, but no meeting was called. Chairman Mark Groenendyk said his request to re-evaluate the elected officials salaries went unanswered.

The committee had recommended an 8 percent increase for the sheriff, 6 percent for the county attorney, and 3 percent for all others. Wanders made the motion to cut the compensation board recommendation by half. The sheriff would get 4 percent, county attorney would get 3 percent and other elected officials would get 1.5 percent.
